Hungarian as an adult can only be learned by understanding and being aware of its structures. Anyone who wants to teach you without grammar is just trying to sell you a fantasy. However, I won’t let you be trapped in the last century with only the content of grammar exercises and translations - we will need so much more: vocabulary building, pronunciation practice, everyday language use, understanding the strategies of dialogues, developing our learning strategies, motivational talks and more. I am committed to involving you in the use of language, and to seeing language not as an aim, but as a tool for learning about community and culture.

You've probably already been introduced to the most important cultural elements: gulyás, lángos, pálinka. But is there more behind them? If you want to understand why Hungarians act the way they do, you need to know Hungarian history, the ongoing social dynamics, our approaches to the world, our neighbours, work, sport and much more. In the different courses, you will be invited on a journey into Hungarian culture, according to your level, in order to understand more about it from the depths. And remember: by understanding other communities and individuals, you will learn the most about yourself.

Every language learning situation is different. Our motivations are different, as are our learning styles, the time we can devote to learning and also our goals. Together, we can find the best solution for you, so you can improve, but also find learning a language a pleasure!

Who am I?

I'm Norbert, linguist, culture freak, hopefully your future teacher.
I have eight years of experience in Hungarian as a foreign language. I graduated from ELTE, one of the most prestigious universities in Hungary, as a teacher of Hungarian and Hungarian as a foreign language. I have a PhD in Applied Linguistics, focusing on the development of methodology in Hungarian as a foreign language, teaching real-life dialogues and curriculum development - I have many academic publications on these topics.
Teaching is my passion. I have been teaching both short and long intensive courses at several universities, organisations, companies and for three years as a freelancer. At ELTE I teach and prepare future teachers of Hungarian as a foreign language.
I am also involved in several international projects. I love travelling and exploring new cultures.

I have been teaching Hungarian for eight years. My students started learning the language with different motivations: they came to Hungary for university or work, they had a Hungarian partner, they wanted to get citizenship, or they were simply interested in Hungarian language and culture. I have many years of experience in both classroom and online language teaching. I have been teaching in private classes, university and company courses, introductory classes lasting a few months, intensive language preparatory courses, summer universities, weekend schools, and special thematic courses. My students have been successful in language exams, university entrance exams and citizenship exams.

I have a Master's degree in teaching Hungarian and Hungarian as a foreign language, and a PhD in Applied Linguistics. My academic interests focus on the teaching of Hungarian dialogues and the development of language teaching methodology. From a scientific and practical point of view, I have investigated the development of Hungarian as a foreign language in several research papers. I am a qualified educator and a knowledgeable expert of Hungarian language and culture, always eager to learn and improve myself.

It's important to talk about the seasons and how to describe your home, but what about discussing the things happening to you, to us, something that really interests you - and stuff you wish you could talk about with your partner, colleagues and friends in Hungarian? My focus is on issues that affect us all: global challenges and local problems are all covered. Environmental disasters, artificial intelligence, political activism - these affect us all. Feel free to bring your own topic and let's talk about it at your language level!

I have had students from over 50 countries. I have been involved in several international academic projects in Europe and beyond. In my biggest project I am working with representatives from almost 40 countries outside Europe. I love new cultures, and the fact that I have been to 30 countries on 4 continents shows that I also enjoy travelling. I also keep learning from my students in order to be able to deliver more precisely what Hungarian culture is in an international context.

I am also learning some languages and immersing myself in a new culture, so I understand perfectly what you are going through. I am currently living in the Netherlands with my Brazilian partner. Too many cultures and languages in one place, right? With me, you can safely talk about your language learning strategies and your individual struggles in a multilingual environment or relationship.

We usually focus on speaking and vocabulary as I have a Hungarian partner and want to advance in order to integrate better into his culture. I have been studying Hungarian with Norbert for one year, and I can highly recommend him. The lessons are well-structured, mainly focused on speaking, and take place in a relaxed and supportive online environment.

At the beginning of the course, we focused more on grammar and spoken communication, as I was able to understand Hungarian but not speak it confidently. After about six months, we shifted our focus to preparing for my Hungarian citizenship exam, which is now the main emphasis of our lessons.

Thanks to this approach, my speaking skills have improved significantly. I am now able to hold conversations in Hungarian, something I could not do at all a year ago.

I especially appreciate that Norbert always starts the lessons with small talk and communicates in Hungarian as much as possible, switching to English only when complex explanations are needed.
